UK PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION :
NOTICE OF ELECTION :
Notice is hereby given that:
1. An election is to be held for a Member to serve in Parliament for each of the eighteen Northern Ireland constituencies. In the event of a contest, a poll will be taken on Thursday 7 May 2015 and the hours of the poll will be from 7.00am to 10.00pm.

2. Nomination papers may be delivered to the appropriate Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) at his/her office between 10.00am and 4.00pm on Thursday 2 April, Tuesday 7 April, Wednesday 8 April and Thursday 9 April 2015. They may be delivered only by the candidate, proposer or seconder or by the election agent if the agent’s name and address has been given to the DRO.

3. Nomination papers may be obtained from the appropriate DRO or by telephoning the Helpline on Freephone 0800 4320 712. Forms may also be downloaded from the Electoral Office website

4. The sum of £500 must be deposited within the appropriate DRO during the time for the delivery of nomination papers. The deposit may be paid only in legal tender, by bankers draft or by CHAPS (contact the DRO for account details).

5. Applications to vote by post or proxy are available to download from the Electoral Office website from any area electoral office or by contacting the Helpline. Completed applications must reach the appropriate DRO by 5.00pm on Thursday 16 April 2015, except where the application is made on the grounds of unforeseen illness. Any such application must be received by 5.00pm on Tuesday 28 April 2015.

What is the Electoral Register? :
** The Electoral Register lists the names and addresses of every person in Northern Ireland who is eligible to vote.
** The Register is updated every month and a new version is published on 1 December each year.
** Any person who is eligible can register at any time and many are contacted by the Electoral Office as a result of information obtained from government bodies (such as the Business Services Organisation) regarding changes of residence.

Am I eligible to register? :
Each person should register at the address where he or she is resident if they:
** Are a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of a Member State of the European Union (click here for a list of countries).
** Are over 17 or will turn 17 by 30 November 2015.

How do I check if I am listed on the Register? :
Contact our Helpline on 0800 4320 712 to check if you are listed on the Register.

Do I have to register? I do not intend to vote :
If you have been contacted by us and asked to complete a registration form it is an offence to refuse to do so or to provide false information.

Does being on the Register affect my credit rating? :
Yes, the Register is used by credit reference agencies such as Experian and Equifax to check applications for credit. If you are not registered you may find it difficult to obtain credit for this reason.

How do I register? :
You need to complete a registration form to be added to the Register. The form can be downloaded from the Register to vote page or contact us and we will post one out to you.

Where can I obtain my National Insurance Number? :
You can find it on the payslip you receive from your employer, benefit/pension details received from the Social Security Agency, your National Insurance Number card or your tax return/any correspondence from the Inland Revenue. If you still cannot find your national insurance number you should contact the National Insurance Registration Helpline on 0300 200 3502.

I made a mistake on my form. Do I need to get a new one? :
No, you can correct the mistake and initial the amendment. If you would prefer to use a new form, you can download one from the Register to vote page or contact us and we will post one out to you.

I’m a student living away from home. Can I register and, if so, where should I register? :
Yes, you should register, and you can do so either at your term time address or at your home address in Northern Ireland.
If you wish to apply for a postal or proxy vote for the duration of your course you can obtain the required form on the Voting by post or proxy page. The form should be returned to the Area Electoral Office which covers your home address in Northern Ireland. Alternatively you can contact us and we will post the form out to you.

My address/name has changed. How do I update my details on the Register? :
You will need to complete a registration form to update your details on the Register. Forms can be obtained from the Register to vote page or contact us and we will post one out to you.

Where do I return my form to? :
You should return your form to your local Area Electoral Office.

Can I email/fax my form to you? :
No, we require an original signature so cannot accept forms by email or fax.

Can I register online? :
In Northern Ireland the law requires an original signature on the registration form, therefore it cannot be completed online.
The Northern Ireland Office (which has responsibility for electoral law) is currently reviewing the legislation with a view to introducing online registration in Northern Ireland.
