Australian Federal Election

The Australian federal election is scheduled to be held in the first half of 2022. Voting options will include in-person and postal services with safety measures in place. A lot will depend on what’s happening with COVID when the election is on and we’re in regular consultation with health authorities to inform our services. We’ll be progressively providing answers to your questions as safety measures are confirmed.

Mobile Voting

Each federal election AEC mobile voting teams visit facilities, such as residential care, and remote communities where people are not able to get to a polling place.

Hospitals And Care Facilities:
While we’ll continue to engage with health authorities, mobile voting teams will likely not be able to visit all aged care facilities or hospitals given the higher COVID-19 risk in these settings.

During the federal election people in these facilities will be able to apply for a postal vote or visit a nearby in-person voting centre. The AEC will have teams in regular contact with relevant facilities to provide support.

Remote Areas of Australia:
Remote voting at a full federal election usually consists of up to 40 mobile voting teams operating across the country, with the majority in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These mobile voting teams visit around 400 communities nation-wide, many of these being remote Indigenous communities.

We’re continuing to engage with health authorities and local communities about the ability for our mobile teams to enter each community. If we cannot enter a remote community due to COVID-19 restrictions we are looking at alternative options and will communicate about those services ahead of the voting period.

Election Safeguards

An Australian federal election is a major event in the nation’s calendar where people come together at voting locations across the country. The health and safety of our staff and all voters is a priority for the AEC in the conduct of this important democratic process.

COVID-19 safety measures will be in place at all voting locations as well as for other activities that support the conduct of the election. As part of the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce, we also liaise with partner agencies like the Australian Federal Police to ensure readiness for the range of both minor and major potential threats the election can pose.

Australians Overseas

If you’re overseas and want to participate in a federal election, you need to take additional action to enrol and then access your vote. The voting options for Australians who are overseas during the federal election or any federal by-election is dependent on the local COVID-19 environment.

The AEC is in regular contact with federal health authorities and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to provide the safest and most effective voting services possible in these difficult circumstances. For most Australians overseas, it is likely that the option available to you will be to vote via post.
