The Opportunities Party TOP’s policies :
** All of TOP’s policies are thoroughly researched via our expert Policy Committee.
** They look at the best evidence from overseas and locally, to craft policy based on what works.
** TOP’s policies focus on solving Aotearoa’s biggest challenges, rather than just treating the symptoms.
** At TOP, our policies are thoughtfully costed so when we put a policy forward, we can afford it.
** We encourage you to have a read, provide us feedback, debate them with friends, and start the conversation about the positive change coming.

The Opportunities Party (TOP) Climate Change Action

** The science is clear, we need to get carbon emissions to zero or face unprecedented global warming. We must reduce its carbon emissions AND prepare for epic warming.
** As of 2020, per capita, we emit the same as China’s CO2 emissions. We are among one of the richest nations in the global and we have access to the technology, that if we choose to, can reduce our emissions.
** While we are a small country, if we take action, we can be a role model to the other 100 small countries that make up 1/3 of all global emissions.
** TOP recognises this is a fundamental issue of our time and will work across the political spectrum to get meaningful action on climate change.

TOP’s solutions:
** Double the price of carbon and phase out free credits. This will incentivise companies to move away from burning coal for process heat and also generate $1b per year to reinvest in the rest of this plan.
** Build denser cities around public and active transport networks as per our policy for Sustainable Housing and Urban Development.
** Remove Fringe Benefits Tax from electric vehicles (including e-bikes and public transport).
** Alter the Building Code to allow energy-efficient materials to be imported into New Zealand, and ensure the building industry has the skills to use them.
** Stop politicising infrastructure decisions and commit to a net-zero emissions future now. After all, we are stuck with transport infrastructure decisions for a long time.
** Broaden the remit of the Electricity Authority to include reducing emissions.
** Only use the offsets gained from tree planting for offsetting agricultural emissions.
** Introduce incentives from the government and the financial sector for households and businesses to be energy smart.
** Increase investment into initiatives such as planting riverbanks and erosion-prone land, using waste wood, producing and using biomass, regenerative agriculture, and optimal electricity demand management techniques.
** Invest in Research & Development to figure out the optimal way forward for moving freight using the roads, rail and shipping.
** Whilst other countries continue to point fingers at each other, we know TOP policy will put New Zealand in the best place to withstand the economic impacts of continued global warming and reduce our carbon emissions.

The Opportunities Party (TOP) Fishing Policy

Even with the best fishing rods and technology, no one can catch fish that aren’t there. TOP believes we are responsible for making sure we add value to the fish in our oceans, not deplete them.

TOP will :
** Restore fish stocks by increasing marine reserves off-limit to fishing
** Ensure quota can only be leased to companies who can prove they are fishing sustainably
** Invest in robust research and technology for preserving fish populations and ecosystems
** Re-negotiate with Māori to protect their fishing interests as per Te Tiriti o Waitangi
** Implement a management system that protects the fishing interests of smaller companies, Māori-owned companies and the wider community
** Implement practices that monitor by-catch and accidental kills
** End commodity exports overseas
