How To Register For Vote In Malaysia?

It is the right of every eligible citizen to elect a government to govern the country through the election of elected representatives to represent them in the Dewan Rakyat and State Legislative Assemblies. Before you are allowed to vote for the representative of your choice in a general election or by -election, you must register your name as a voter. You cannot vote if your name is not listed on the electoral roll.

The EC conducts two (2) types of voter registration, namely:
New registration:
Voter registration for the first time.

Change of Constituency Registration:
Application of a registered voter to register his new residential address. If a voter moves to a new place and registers the change of address at the EC, then his or her Constituency will be determined according to the registration of the new address.

According to the election law, the EC can register two (2) types of voters, namely:
Ordinary Voters:
Ordinary voters are registered voters who need to be present to vote at polling stations during the election.

Absentee Voters (PTH):
Absentee voters are the group of voters specified in Regulation 2, Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulations 2002, that is, military personnel and spouses, civil servants serving abroad and spouses residing with them as well as full-time students studying in abroad and spouses residing with him.

For Ordinary Voters:
To register as a regular voter, you need to:
** Come in person to any of the registration centers;
** Submit your identity card to the EC staff who will fill in your registration form;
** Check the registration form filled in by the EC staff and ensure that all the information entered is correct and in accordance with your identity card before signing;
** Lower your signature after being satisfied; and
** Obtain a copy of the registration form and keep it as proof if necessary to make any claim during the exhibition period, the Additional Voter Registration Draft later.

For Voters Not Present:
Members of the Army

PTH registration from the ATM is carried out by JRP-ATM officers. To register as a PTH, you need to:
** Contacting EC officers appointed from among JRP officers;
** Submit your military identity card and MyKad (for spouses) to the officer appointed by the EC who will fill in your registration form.
** When resubmitting the completed form, check the completed registration form and make sure all the information entered is correct, before signing;
** Download your signature after being satisfied; day;
** Obtain a copy of the registration form and keep it as proof if necessary to make any claim during the exhibition period of the draft Additional Voter Register.

Note:
** The Polling Center for ATM members and spouses is determined according to the address where the ATM member works.
** Only ATM members and their spouses are eligible to register as PTH. Other family members need to register as ordinary voters and the Polling Center is designated using the applicant’s residential address (as in the identity card).

Malaysian Citizens Abroad:
PTH registration of civil servants or students abroad and their spouses is carried out by officials of the office of the High Commissioner, Embassy or Consulate of Malaysia abroad. To register as a PTH (overseas), you need to:

** Come in person to the office of the High Commissioner, Embassy or Consulate of Malaysia abroad;
** Submit your MyKad or passport to the officer appointed by the EC who will fill in your registration form;
** State your residential address outside your Country, your occupation and the serial number of form A to the staff to be filled in on a piece of A4 paper and attached to your registration form.
** Check the completed registration form and make sure all the information entered is correct, before signing;
** Download your signature once satisfied; and
** Obtain a copy of the registration form and keep it as proof if necessary to make any claim during the exhibition period of the Additional Voter Register Draft.

Note:
** Only civil servants and their spouses and students and their spouses are eligible to register as PTH (Overseas). Other family members need to register as ordinary voters and the Polling Center is designated using the applicant’s residential address in Malaysia (as in the identity card).
** Malaysian citizens residing/working abroad (non-civil servants/students/spouses of civil servants/spouses of students) can apply to register as a regular voter at any office of the High Commissioner, Embassy or Consulate of Malaysia abroad.
** Status as PTH (Overseas) is permanent until the voter applies for re -registration as a regular voter after returning to Malaysia.

Who Can Register To Vote In Malaysia?

The eligibility requirements to register as a voter in Malaysia are as follows:
** A Malaysian citizen;
** Has reached the age of 21 years;
** Residing in the constituency wishing to be registered; and
** Not barred/disqualified by applicable law.
