Te Virginia Voter Registration service helps Virginia voters to verify their voter registration eligibility to vote, and view absentee ballot requests and other voter information. Answers to several common questions are found below. For other questions or assistance, please contact the Department of Elections (ELECT).

Why do you need the last 4 digits of my Social Security Number?
The disclosure of your SSN4 is completely voluntary. We request the SSN4 as part of looking up your voter record, along with name and date of birth. Alternatively, you may enter your voter identification number.

What is my voter identification number?
Your voter identification number is printed on your voter information card that you received from your local general registrar’s office when you registered to vote.

Where do I go to vote in the next election?
While viewing your voter information online, look for “Polling Location” and click “Show”. In addition, your polling location is shown on your voter information card. More information is available on the ELECT web site.

What is my election participation history?
While viewing your voter information online, look for “Election Participation History” and click “Show” in order to get a list of past elections that you voted in.

What are my districts?
While viewing your voter information online, look for “Districts” and click “Show” in order to get a list of electoral districts that you are entitled vote in, including your congressional district, state districts for state house and state senate, and local electoral districts.

How do I change my address or update other voter registration information?
Download a Virginia Voter Registration application, print and complete the form, sign it, and mail it to either your local election office or to the Virginia Department of Elections’ main office located at 1100 Bank Street, 1st Floor, Richmond, VA 23219. You can also change your address as part of an Absentee Ballot application.

How do I vote absentee?
Download a Virginia Absentee Request form, print and complete the form, sign it, and mail it to either your local election office or the Virginia Department of Elections’s main office located at 1100 Bank Street, 1st Floor, Richmond, VA 23219.

How do I know whether I can vote absentee?
While viewing your voter information online, look for “Status” near the bottom. If you have been approved for an absentee ballot in any upcoming election, the name of the election will be shown there. Alternatively, for military and overseas voters, the status will indicate whether you are approved for absentee ballots in upcoming elections, and until when that approval lasts.

Where can I get these forms?
You can download them from the ELECT web site.

Why do I have to print and sign these forms?
Under Virginia’s state election laws, a local election official can only consider your request after receiving your signed application.

What is the online ballot marking option?
Online ballot marking is another ELECT service, which allows you to view your ballot for the upcoming election, indicate your ballot choices online, and have a complete absentee ballot created for you to download, along with instructions for signing and returning your printed online absentee ballot kit. You can also download a blank ballot and mark it by hand. This service is available to overseas and military voters, especially those for whom the postal service is not rapid enough for the paper blank ballot to be mailed from Virginia overseas, and the returned marked ballot arrive back in time to be counted.

How do I use online ballot marking?
While viewing your voter information online, look for “Status” near the bottom. If you have been approved for online balloting, you will see “Eligible for online ballot marking” followed by the name of the current election. Click on the election name, and a new window or tab will open, where you can get started with your online ballot.

I don’t see the “Eligible for online ballot marking”.
To be eligible to use online balloting, you must be an overseas or military voter, approved for absentee voting. If so, then your status will be displayed as “Overseas/Military Absentee Voter”. In addition, online balloting but be available for use; online balloting is available only in the 45 days prior to each state election. If it is more than 45 days to the next election, online balloting will not be offered

  1. Can a registered republican vote for a democrat and visa versa in the 2016 presidential race?
