Voting In An PNGEC National Election

** In PNG, we have a National Election every 5 years. A National Election is for the whole country.
** Open Electorate ballots are PINK Provincial Electorate ballots are BLUE Each ballot goes in a separate ballot box.
** In the National Election,we vote for members of Parliament.
** In the 2022 National Election, the polling period begins on 2 July. Polling start dates differ across the Provinces.
** The polling schedule tells you where and when you can go to the polling booth to vote.
** In 2022, the election will end after the votes are counted and the election writs are returned (on or before 29 July 2022).
** You can vote at your assigned polling place which will operate as per the polling schedule.
** Each polling team will have the ward roll – so you need to be on the roll for the ward in which the polling team is operating.
** A person cannot turn up on any day to vote. No polling will be scheduled for Saturdays or Sundays.
** The Constitution of PNG gives you the right to vote. The PNG Electoral Commission is in charge of the election.

LPV Steps In An PNGEC National Election

** In PNG, we use Limited Preferential Voting, or LPV.On each ballot paper, you will choose three candidates to vote for.
** Voters will put 3 preferences on the open ballot and 3 preferences on the provincial ballot.You will rank your three favorite candidates.
** You will choose your first choice candidate.You will choose your second choice candidate.
** You will choose your third choice candidate.You must choose 6 candidates on election day. 3 for the open ballot and 3 for the provincial ballot.
** If you do not choose three candidates, your ballot might not be counted.You will write the candidate’s name or identification number on your ballot.
** Each ballot will have space for three candidate names or identification numbers.

Guidance Inside The Polling Booth

** The Poll Clerk helps you inside the polling booth.Men and women are helped by different Poll Clerks.
** If you are a man, the Poll Clerk near the Presiding Officer will help you. If you are a woman, the Poll Clerk near the Assistant Presiding Officer will help you. You will tell your name to the Poll Clerk.
** The Poll Clerk will confirmthat your name is on the Certified List of Voters, the Voter Roll. You will tell the Poll Clerk that you have not yet voted in the 2022 general election.
** The Poll Clerk will check your hands for indelible ink. The Poll Clerk will make sure there is nothing on your hands.
** The Poll Clerk will ask you to wipe your left little finger. The Poll Clerk will apply indelible ink to your left little finger.
** If it is not possible to apply ink to a left little finger due to disability or injury, they will use the next finger and so on.

Getting & Marking Your Ballot Papers In An PNGEC National Election

Getting Your Ballot Papers :
** After your finger is inked, you will receive your ballot papers. You will receive two ballot papers.
** You will receive a pink ballot for the open electorate. You will receive a blue ballot for the provincial electorate.
** Each ballot goes in a separate ballot box. A polling official will give you your ballot papers.
** If you are a man, the Presiding Officer will give you your ballot papers. If you are a woman, the Assistant Presiding Officer will give you your ballot papers.
** The polling official will write their initials on the back of your ballot papers. The polling official will remove your ballot papers from the ballot paper booklet.
** The polling official will place your ballot papers on the edge of the table. You will take your ballot papers from the edge of the table.
** The polling official will explain the voting process. The polling official will direct you to an empty voting compartment.

Marking Your Ballot Papers :
** After the polling official explains how to vote, you will go to the voting compartment. There are separate voting compartments for men and for women.
** You will use the pen in the voting compartment to mark your ballots. You will mark two ballots in the voting compartment.
** You will fold each ballot after you have marked the ballot. Take your ballots with you when you leave the voting compartment.
** If you make a mistake on your ballot, tell the polling official. The polling official can give you a new ballot
** After you leave the voting compartment, you will put your ballots in the ballot boxes.
** The Ballot Box Guard will show you the right ballot box.
** The pink ballot goes in the pink box.The blue ballot goes in the blue box.
** Remember not to touch the ballot box.After you put your ballots in the ballot boxes, you will leave the polling booth
** Congratulations! You voted in the 2022 National Election!
